 What I’m Reading…

chemistBlurb – She used to work for the U.S. government, but very few people ever knew that. An expert in her field, she was one of the darkest secrets of an agency so clandestine it doesn’t even have a name. And when they decided she was a liability, they came for her without warning.

Now she rarely stays in the same place or uses the same name for long. They’ve killed the only other person she trusted, but something she knows still poses a threat. They want her dead, and soon.

When her former handler offers her a way out, she realizes it’s her only chance to erase the giant target on her back. But it means taking one last job for her ex-employers. To her horror, the information she acquires only makes her situation more dangerous.

Resolving to meet the threat head-on, she prepares for the toughest fight of her life but finds herself falling for a man who can only complicate her likelihood of survival. As she sees her choices being rapidly whittled down, she must apply her unique talents in ways she never dreamed of.

To be honest, I didn’t expect much from this. I’ve read Meyer’s Twilight series (who hasn’t) but not her adult fiction. I picked this up as research for the spy series I’m writing and while it hasn’t given me much insight, I am enjoying it more than expected! I’m pleasantly surprised by it. Even though Meyer’s writing is more telling than showing, I’m caught up with the story and the characters. So much that I’m looking forward to a chunk of time to finish the thing. I expect bedtime might be later than usual tonight so I can find out what happens!

What I’ve Read…

couple-next-doorBlurb – Anne and Marco Conti seem to have it all—a loving relationship, a wonderful home, and their beautiful baby, Cora, but one night when they are at a dinner party next door, a terrible crime is committed. Suspicion immediately focuses on the parents, but the truth is a much more complicated story.

Inside the curtained house, an unsettling account of what actually happened unfolds. Detective Rasbach knows that the panicked couple is hiding something. Both Anne and Marco soon discover that the other is keeping secrets, secrets they’ve kept for years.

What follows is the nerve-racking unraveling of a family, a chilling tale of deception, duplicity, and unfaithfulness that will keep you breathless until the final shocking twist.

I liked this better than Girl on the Train. While I figured that one out about halfway through, The Couple kept me guessing. And I definitely didn’t see the end coming!

What am I Reading Next…

After I finish The Chemist, I’ll only have 3 more books to go to finish my Goodreads challenge of 60 books! I’m looking for light and fluffy, something I can whip through before Christmas. Any suggestions? I’ve got a Christina Lauren and a Cora Carmack on my pile that will be quick reads.

What about you? What are you reading this week?

WWW Wednesday – What I’m Reading – Smut!

What I Read This Week? Some Smut

For me, Jilly Cooper is a classic example of smut, similar to Jackie Collins. Not exactly romance, but not erotica and definitely not to be classed under women’s fiction!

I checked for the definition of smut:

  • small flake of soot or other dirt; all those black smuts from the engine or a fungal disease of grains in which parts of ear change to black powder
Not exactly what I was looking for, so I checked urban dictionary, which said smut is:
  • ‘A writing style that is sexually explicit and generally associated with females.Basically porn aimed towards women. The difference between porn and smut:Porn: Usually has very little plot line and is extremely sexually explicit. Mostly watched or ‘read’ for the pictures. Aimed towards men.Smut: Highly developed stories with love lines and other things that appeal to women that also include alot of sexually explicit scenes. Can be in comic form, or in written form (as in romance books)’
That sounds like Jilly Cooper. Also Emma Chase, another book I read. I do think calling it porn is a little too much, however. I don’t read it all the time, but once in a while smut is good if you just want some mindless entertainment.
On to the meme!

Started it Monday night and already over halfway finished! I wouldn’t call it a thriller yet, but I’m looking forward to the twist. So far, much better (imo) than Girl on the Train.

What I Read…

royally-screwed-by-emma-chaseNicholas Arthur Frederick Edward Pembrook, Crowned Prince of Wessco, aka His Royal Hotness, is wickedly charming, devastatingly handsome, and unabashedly arrogant; hard not to be when people are constantly bowing down to you.

Then, one snowy night in Manhattan, the prince meets a dark haired beauty who doesn’t bow down. Instead, she throws a pie in his face.

Nicholas wants to find out if she tastes as good as her pie, and this heir apparent is used to getting what he wants.

Dating a prince isn’t what waitress Olivia Hammond ever imagined it would be.

There’s a disapproving queen, a wildly inappropriate spare heir, relentless paparazzi, and brutal public scrutiny. While they’ve traded in horse drawn carriages for Rolls Royces, and haven’t chopped anyone’s head off lately, the royals are far from accepting of this commoner.

But to Olivia, Nicholas is worth it.

Nicholas grew up with the whole world watching, and now Marriage Watch is in full force. In the end, Nicholas has to decide who he is and, more importantly, who he wants to be: a King… or the man who gets to love Olivia forever.

Smutty book # 1.

The main thing I didn’t like about this book was the title. I had to keep the cover hidden from my kids. Luckily, it only took me a couple of days to read it!

Sweet, sexy and entirely predictable. I get that New Adult books need some conflict but I wish they would stop with making the guy such an ass that it’s upsetting that the girl would forgive him. The book had a couple of those moments, but ended on a happy note, setting up for the next in the series. A good light and fluffy read.

Smutty book #2

mountBlurb – Rupert is consumed by one obsession: that Love Rat, his adored grey horse, be proclaimed champion stallion. He longs to trounce Roberto’s Revenge, the stallion owned by his detested rival Cosmo Rannaldini, which means abandoning his racing empire at Penscombe and his darling wife Taggie, and chasing winners in the richest races worldwide, from Dubai to Los Angeles to Melbourne.

Luckily, the fort at home is held by Rupert’s assistant Gav, a genius with horses, fancied by every stable lass, but damaged by alcoholism and a vile wife. When Gala, a grieving but ravishing Zimbabwean widow moves to Penscombe as carer for Rupert’s wayward father, it is not just Gav who is attracted to her: a returning Rupert finds himself dangerously tempted.

Gala adores horses, and when she switches to working in the yard, her carer’s job is taken by a devastatingly handsome South African man who claims to be gay but seems far keener on caring for the angelic Taggie. And as increasingly sinister acts of sabotage strike at Penscombe, the game of musical loose boxes gathers apace . . .

Mount is classic Jilly Cooper. Not her best (that was Rivals) but pretty darn good. If you like a sexy romp in the wilds of Cotchester, this is the book for you. If you don’t like smut, don’t bother with it!!

What I’ll Read Next…

I have no idea. I’ve got a pretty big pile of TBR books that I need to get through before Christmas, when it will get even bigger! 🙂
